What does sustainability mean at Herkkumaa?
For us, sustainability means concrete actions in production, raw materials and resource use.
Where do our impacts come from?
Our environmental impacts arise primarily from raw material sourcing and supply chains, energy use in production, packaging and logistics. We also have an impact on the wellbeing of our own employees and the people working across our value chain, as well as on consumers’ everyday lives and choices.
What are we focusing on?
We are working to mitigate climate change by reducing our emissions. Collaborating with our Finnish contract farmers is important to us. We continuously improve workplace safety and the wellbeing of our employees.
Herkkumaa has committed to science-based emission reductions across its own operations and value chain through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
We were the first in the world to deploy Elstor Oy’s 10 MWh industrial energy storage system, enabling lower-emission steam production.
The Key Flag (Avainlippu) symbol guarantees that our products are manufactured in Finland, specifically in Tuulos, Hämeenlinna. By choosing our products, you are also supporting Finnish jobs.
We have significantly reduced our water consumption in recent years. By converting our cooling water circuits to closed systems, we cut consumption by 46,2% between 2020 and 2023.
Herkkumaa is committed to the principles of the Vision Zero Forum (Nollis). In 2026, we reached a significant milestone: 646 days without a single accident resulting in sick leave — and the journey continues!
We use renewable electricity. The 440 solar panels installed on the roofs of our warehouse buildings produce approximately 10 % of the energy we use in production.
We continuously develop our production to be more energy-efficient and lower in emissions. We invest in renewable energy, water reduction, responsible raw materials, and packaging and production solutions that support the circular economy. Our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative guides our climate work across the entire value chain.
At Herkkumaa, sustainability means a safe working environment, caring for employee wellbeing, and responsible collaboration throughout our supply chain. We take a long-term approach to skill development, occupational wellbeing and safety, and we require our suppliers to commit to shared principles and respect for human rights.
Sustainability is part of Herkkumaa’s daily management, objectives and decision-making. Our operations are guided by shared principles, a Code of Conduct, and the continuous monitoring and development of sustainability. We also provide an anonymous reporting channel for raising concerns and supporting a culture of responsible conduct.
